It's incredibly easy to make your own oat milk! You'll save yourself a lot of money, too! I don't even soak the oats or strain the "milk." Just blend up oats and water with any desired extra flavour, and this dairy-free milk is good to go in a couple of minutes!

I have found that commercially available oat milks are not always gluten-free. If being gluten-free is important to you, this is your opportunity to ensure that yours is.
Homemade oat milk is a great non-dairy alternative because of its mild, neutral flavour. Even with certified gluten-free oats, it's much less expensive to make than nut milks.
Now, I don't use this "milk" for cooking or even in coffee, because - you know what happens to oats and water when you heat it - it thickens! However, for putting on my cereal, usually oat-based anyway, it's fantastic! It also works well in smoothies.

Oat Milk Ingredients

- Oats - This recipe was tested with quick oats, which are finer than regular oats. If your oat milk needs to be gluten-free, be sure to use certified gluten-free oats. I talk more about this on my Start Here page.
- Salt - I prefer to use sea salt. Either coarse or fine is really nice here.
Instructions
Basic Oat Milk
For basic creamy oat milk, simply fill your blender jar with water to the 4-cup mark. Add 1 cup of regular oats and a pinch of sea salt. Give it a whirl at high speed for 30 seconds, and it's ready to enjoy! I use a Blendtec blender, and that works well for me.

Variations
If you would like to be creative and add more flavour to your basic oat milk, try one or more of these options before blending:
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon coconut sugar

Chocolate "Milk"
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons coconut sugar (or more, if you prefer)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
