This gluten free oat milk is incredibly easy to make and will save you a lot of money! I don't soak my oats or strain the "milk." Just blend up the oats and water with any desired extra flavour, and it's good to go!
I've been using a variety of nut milks for years. Then oat milk came to the stores. For some reason, the oat milk available in my local store costs even more that the nut milk! I don't know why that is. It certainly doesn't cost much to make it. Even with certified gluten free oats, it's quite inexpensive.
Now, I don't use this "milk" for cooking or even in coffee, because - you know what happens to oats and water when you heat it. It thickens! However, for putting on my cereal, usually oat-based anyway, it's fantastic! It also works well in smoothies.
How to Make Oat Milk
Basic Oat Milk
For basic oat milk, simply fill your blender jar to the 4-cup mark. Add 1 cup of regular oats and a pinch of sea salt. Give it a whirl at high speed for 30 seconds, and it's ready to enjoy! I use a Blendtec blender, and that works well for me.
Variations
If you would like to be creative and add more flavour to your basic oat milk, try one or more of these options before blending:
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon coconut sugar
Chocolate "Milk"
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons coconut sugar (or more, if you prefer)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
